This can be a hot topic. I love both of these shows for different reasons.
British: 1. I am in love with Ricky Gervais (if you aren't listening to his podcasts yet, then you are missing out) 2. I am in love with Martin Freeman. (tim is so much better than jim) 3. I love the accents and the humor. I often consider myself to be 1/10th british since my dad lived there for about 4 years of his teenage life. (since the podcast I have been using terms like bullocks/bullox and fancy that, so I am not engrossed in the culture) 4. The show rocks and I cry during the special every time I watch it, so I really love this show.
American: 1. FUNNY AS HELL. 2. I love Steve Carrell. 3. You can relate to the humor and it is just so funny. 4. Ryan the Temp and Kelly...the best.
So which do you like better? I say they are two different shows and don't need to be compared, but tell me what you think.

DEFINATELY the american. I love the situations dwight gets into and how he is the only one in the whole office who tries to work. Steve Carell is also one of the funniest people on television and he plays the perfect attention whore.

The american one is easier to relate to. Also the british one seems slow and boring also it seems everone talks really soft. I love the character development in the american one and how you understand the character better each episode. Also the way they pick on dwight and how he's so naive to whats going on around him. Steve Carrell is a funnier boss and is more annoying and a d bag toward the others. Also the temp BJ Novakis awsome and his character is awsome too.

Okay but they picked on Gareth on the British one and that was hilarious!
When I watch the british one, which is almost once or twice a week, I turn the TV up really loud so I can understand it. I love it. It took me a few times through the episodes to get every joke, but that is just because of the language difference (so to speak)
I love Ryan the Temp! (or Bj Novakis, who I hear writes the scripts)

I love the british version. I still watch them on DVD all the time(watching those episodes on DVD is especially convenient because you can turn on the subtitles, which helps with the brit-speak). I was really skeptical when they announced they were going to make an american version, but now I consider it to be the funniest show on TV, so in that respect, it exceeded expectations. I don't think I'll ever be able to decide which one I like more, simple because they just seem like two seperate shows. I mean, the american office has already double the amount of episodes that the british series had.

a few thoughts: 1. Ricky Gervais' David Brent is infinitely more likable than Steve Carell's Michael Scott 2. The Pam/Jim relationship is more believable and interesting than the Dawn/Tim relationship, but if the american version ever has Pam and Jim get together, it will NEVER top when Dawn and Tim finally got together. 3. The supporting cast members in the american version (Stanley, Kevin, Kelly) are much funnier than the supporting cast in the british version (with the exception of Keith, the guy who eats the eggs) 4. As funny as the american version is, they will never have a funnier scene than David Brent dancing.

I'm writing my response before reading anything in this thread. All I read so far was the title.
I love both shows. And I love them for completely different reasons. I think the two are hard to compare because they are so different. But if I had two sets of DVDs in front of me and had to choose one it would be the British version.
Why? Because I saw the British version first and quickly was hooked into Ricky Gervais' style of comedy. It's so subtle. For example the episode where he is firing the forklift driver, and they're going back and forth for a few minutes and all of a sudden a mans head pops up from under the desk. The whole time he's firing this guy, there is somebody else in the room making it so much funnier and less private. Then a minute later it pulls back to reveal Gareth is standing in there as well. I think that's one of my favorite parts in the whole series.
I also like how the British version ended at it's prime. 12 episodes and a special. It leaves you wanting so much more. And I'd rather be left wanting more than see a show get stale. I can watch those 12 episodes over and over and laugh harder each time.
As for the American version, it's completely different. You have Steve Carrell, who is the complete opposite of Gervais. Nothing is subtle about him, and that's whats so great about his character. Also, the characters have developed so much and I really want to see where it's going. It's defined itself from the British version and I feel that it's the best comedy on TV right now.

The temp Ryan played by BJ Novak is also a writer and co-producer for the series, and scripted some of the episodes. I think he used to be on punked also.

Yeah, that was definitely a cliffhanger if I've ever seen one. My favorite part about the episode was Scrantonicity.
For the first time in a while last night's episode really seemed to mirror The Office UK. This was a lot like the final 1 hour Special. Michael Scott (David Brent) actually has some sort of girlfriend, and she's happy too. And Jim and Pam (Tim and Dawn) end with a kiss.
I really can't wait to see where this goes. The second series was way better than the first. And the love story parts of the UK Office ended here.

well, the uk version ended with Dawn actually leaving Lee to be with Tim...last night just left everything up in the air. But I guess thats what good cliffhangers do.

I just watched all 12+ episodes the British Office again this week and that show is soooo freaking amazing. I don't think it could be any better. Time to start over at the first episode again...

I pick up new words each time I watch it. And Ricky Gervais is beyond awesome, check out this picture I found of him. From his old band Seona Dancing. He's everything I wish I could be. www.myspace.com/seonadancing
